Ongoing Project
Welcome Baby
$6,000 Pledged Annually Since 2019
The Friends of Strathcona County Library Society have committed to funding complimentary Welcome Baby bags. This kit, filled with essential resources is designed by the library to make the early stages of parenting a little easier and a lot more enjoyable. This kit equips parents with materials that empower them to support their baby’s early literacy development from birth. It also introduces the library’s extensive services, collections, and programs dedicated to early literacy.
Past Project
Wonderbooks
$10,000 Donation
Friends of the Strathcona County Library Society has recently donated funds to purchase Wonderbooks for the children’s section of the library. Each Wonderbook combines a print book with a ready-to-play audiobook inside, allowing kids to press play and follow along with their favourite stories. This innovative format makes reading even more engaging and interactive, helping young readers develop a love for books while enjoying a fun, immersive experience.
Past Project
Expanded Digital Collections
$20,000 Donation
During the 2019 pandemic, Friends contributed over $20,000 to support the Strathcona County Library’s acquisition of online materials. This funding was crucial in helping the library meet the increased demand for digital resources from the community during a time of widespread disruption.
Past Project
Ukrainian Books
$4,170 Donation
In 2022, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine led to a significant surge in Ukrainian refugees fleeing their homeland. As Ukrainian families began to settle in our community, the library received numerous requests for Ukrainian language children’s books to assist young readers in adjusting to their new environment. In response, Friends quickly approved a donation to purchase these essential books, ensuring that children could continue to connect with their cultural heritage during this challenging time.
Past Project
Discovery Table
$10,860 Donation
Past Project
Interactive Floor Projector
$2,600 Donation
In 2014, the children’s Discovery Area became home to an interactive floor projector that Friends was able to help contribute to. The projector cycles through various interactive games and imaginative scenarios, encouraging kids to jump, dance, and explore as they play.
Past Project
Furnishings
$125,000 Grant
As a registered non-profit society, Friends of Strathcona County Library Society has the unique ability to apply for grants that the library itself cannot under the Libraries Act. In 2002, Friends successfully secured a $125,000 grant, that was put towards new furnishings in the library to benefit both patrons and staff.
